The Porirua area and Pauatahanui Inlet are growing in population, and exposed to a similar range of hazards as the Kapiti coastal communities. Porirua has limited communication links to adjoining areas because of the steep hills defining the edge of the Porirua basin. Parts of Porirua also have a significant tsunami risk.

The coastline, bays, harbour and inlet are vulnerable to a possible tsunami, and it is important to know what to do.
If you feel an earthquake that is either longer than a minute OR strong enough that it’s hard to stand up, then get to high ground, out of all zones, as soon as the shaking stops!
If there is an official warning, then evacuate from the zones (red, orange or yellow) stated in the warning.
